Voting is the most important part of democracy, so I urge everyone who is eligible to register and vote. I am a proud supporter of the 2002 bill, The Help America Vote Act, which will ensure that everyone who casts a vote will have their ballots counted. Voter registration can be obtained from either the local election official in your county or city, or through registration outreach programs sponsored by such groups as the League of Women Voters.

In addition, you can register to vote

• when applying for a driver,s license or identity card at State DMV or driver,s licensing offices, State offices proving public assistance, State Offices providing State-funded programs for individuals with disabilities, and at armed forces recruitment offices.
• at many public libraries, post offices, unemployment offices, and at public high schools and universities.
• at colleges, universities and trade schools participating in federal student loan programs. They offer voter registration applications to students prior to general elections.

To register to vote in the State of Georgia you must:

• Be 18 years old within six months after the day of registration, and be 18 years old to vote
• Not be serving a sentence for having been convicted of a FELONY, IF YOU ARE SERVING A SENTENCE FOR A MISDEMENOR YOU STILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE
• Not have been judicially determined to be mentally incompetent, unless the disability has been removed

After registration is complete you must bring one of the 17 acceptable forms of identification to your voting precinct.

Requesting An Absent Voter Ballot

Your request for an absent voter ballot must be in writing and can be submitted to your city or township clerk. You may request an absent voter ballot with a letter or post card, or you can obtain a pre-printed application form at your local clerk's office. Requests to have an absent voter ballot mailed to you must be submitted to your clerk no later than 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election.
