1968 Lewis marries Lillian Miles on December 21st.

1977 Lewis was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to direct more than 250,000 volunteers of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency.

1981 John Lewis was elected to the Atlanta City Council.

1986 John Lewis was elected to Congress as the US Representative of Georgia's Fifth Congressional District

1991 John Lewis is named Senior Chief Deputy Whip of the Democratic Caucus.

1998 John Lewis authored his biography with writer Michael D'Orso, entitled Walking With The Wind: A Memoir of the Movement.

2001 John Lewis is awarded the John F. Kennedy "Profile of Courage Lifetime Achievement Award."

2003 After 15 years of submitting legislation in every session of Congress the National African American Museum Act passed the Senate on November 20th

2005 John Lewis along side other Civil Rights Activist organized a March in Atlanta supporting of the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 on the Act,s 40th Anniversary

2006 In May John Lewis was arrested for protesting against Genocide in Sudan at the Sudanese Embassy
