CRIME
- Appropriated approximately $450,000 under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 (enacted) for Mobile Data Terminal technology improvements for facilitated communications between law enforcement and civil service officers in the City of East Point, the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, improving their performance to equal or surpass federal Homeland Security standards
- Introduced SAFETY (Securing American Families by Educating and Training Youth) through Nonviolence Act of 2008 (referred to Senate Committee on Education and Labor), which provides funding for community outreach programming educating youth about alternative dispute resolution practices and building more positive relationships between local law enforcement and community residents within local, state and tribal governments
- Actively endorses and pursues funding for community development and youth outreach programs, such as YouthBuild, which addresses issues including crime prevention in low-income communities, and the needs of at-risk teen and young adult inhabitants; and National Parents Corps, a national organization with local roots in Atlanta that builds partnerships between parents and school officials to create a safer, drug and violence-free environment for middle and high school students
- Cosponsored the Drug Sentencing Reform and Cocaine Kingpin Trafficking Act of 2007 (referred to House Subcommittee on Health) , providing for stiffer penalties for major traffickers of controlled substances; lowered sentences for simple possession; and the elimination of the distinction between powder and crack cocaine to prevent sentencing disparities.
- Cosponsored the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 (referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary) , providing for multilevel government investigation and prosecution of hate crimes, as well as prohibition of certain delineated hate crimes as outlined in the legislation.
- Cosponsored Second Chance Act of 2007 (enacted) , providing for funding to support post-incarceration violation and reentry studies; redefining of "violent offenders" for purposes of drug sentencing; and supporting surveys of the needs of children with incarcerated parents.
