Health Care Reform Now!

I believe that health care is a basic human right.  More than 400 Georgians lose their health insurance each day.  The cost of insuring the average American family increases by nearly $2000 each year and insurance companies are eliminating more and more of your health care choices.  Giving every American quality affordable health care will save money.  Georgia families pay nearly $1000 more in annual health insurance premiums because of the uninsured.  This is an unnecessary burden and makes it more important now than ever that we reform our broken health care system.

I am proud of the steps taken.  Through my work in Congress, I have helped establish the National Center on Minority and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health, expanded Medicare to cover preventative screenings for things like Glaucoma and helped ensure that Community Health Centers are reimbursed properly for treating seniors covered by Medicare.  However, these steps are just part of a greater effort to make a more effective health care system.

I voted in favor of the health care reform legislation that was passed by the House on November 7th, 2009.  It was a tremendous step forward.  But there is much work yet to be done and I believe that there is much more that Congress must do for the American people.  I will continue to work, continue to legislate, continue to speak up and speak out for quality affordable health care for every American.
