Lewis Marks final King Sermon
By Leslie Small
Created Mar 31 2008 - 11:15pm

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) marks the 40th anniversary of the final sermon by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday by preaching from the same pulpit and discussing the issues of faith and civil rights in a forum at Washington National Cathedral that is being co-sponsored by Politico.

Lewis, himself an icon of the civil rights movement and the former chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, will focus on King's last Sunday sermon, titled "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution." King, speaking to an overflow crowd at the Cathedral of more then 3,000 people, used the story of Rip Van Winkle as a metaphor for how Americans were remaining oblivious to the sweeping changes that were redefining their society.

King was assassinated in Memphis four days later and was memorialized at the Cathedral on April 5, 1968 - just five days after preaching from the great church's pulpit.

The sermon is to begin at 11:15 a.m. and will be preceded, from 10 to 10:50 a.m., by a question-and-answer session between Lewis and Cathedral Dean Sam Lloyd. The event is part of the Cathedral's regular Sunday Forum series, in which a public conversation is held in the main part of the church between Sunday services. Audience membersĀ - both in-person and onlineĀ - may submit questions.

A live stream of the forum as well as the sermon is available here [1].

The Cathedral and Politico will be joining forces for additional forums in the fall that will further explore the intersection of the worlds of faith and politics as well as the impact that issues of spirituality are having in the 2008 presidential race.
