I am pleased to be running for re-election to represent the 5th Congressional district of Georgia. The people of this district have been good to me, and I have used every resource available to me to be good to them. Metro Atlanta is a vibrant, growing and diverse district. As a federal legislator, I have always held the best interests of my constituents in my heart and mind.
Through $5 billion in federal Recovery Act funding, millions of dollars to MARTA and other road and highway projects, as well support to the district’s educational institutions, particularly in the area of health care research, I have channeled millions in federal resources to help resolve the challenges of our community.
There is still a great deal of work. Though we have made some strides through grants for additional police officers, more protection at the Fulton County courthouse, and homeland security assistance to the city of Atlanta, I want to work even more closely with the local governments in our district—the mayors, fire and police chiefs in Fulton and Clayton Counties-- to ensure that our neighborhoods are safe.
Cities and states are laying-off teachers, and it is a great loss to the nation. We cannot allow our educational system to fail. I will continue to call for our nation to renew its commitment to public education and the arts.
As a member of the House Ways & Means Committee, I will continue to stand up and fight for the needs of working families and to protect our environment. And my focus in this term will be to do all I possibly can, working with the President and my colleagues in the Congress to get our economy moving again. We must find ways to create jobs that will help our citizens stay in their homes, feed their families, and provide the best opportunities available for the children of our district. Thank you.
